Short-Term Rent, Mortgage, and Utility assistance (STRMU), through the US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) program, helps people living with HIV keep their housing in times of financial need. STRMU services are available at CrescentCare for individuals and families that meet HOPWA eligibility:

  • Have an HIV diagnosis
  • Have income at or below 80% Area Mean Income (AMI) {$39,450 for a household of 1 in 2020}
  • Live in the Greater New Orleans HOPWA service area
  • Can demonstrate financial need for assistance with rent, mortgage, or utility bills

The CARES ACT and special HUD rules during the COVID-19 pandemic make STRMU assistance more flexible than ever. Contact your Ryan White case manager or HIV Social Service provider for information about STRMU.
